The CDO Imperative: Harnessing Data and Creating Value

Harnessing data and creating value is a burning issue in capital markets, and one that will be centre stage at next week’s A-Team Group Data Management Summit in London. Moderating a panel of chief data officers (CDOs) and data management directors, A-Team chief content officer Andrew Delaney will question how CDOs are embedding data into business culture, ensuring senior management understands the value of data driven strategies, selecting technologies that improve data quality and, ultimately, providing value.

On the panel are Hany Choueiri, head of data governance and strategy (CDO), EMEA, State Street; Adam Preston, CDO, Santander; Jean Panagamuwa, director of data analysis and data management, Capital One; and Gary Goldberg, CDO, Mizuho International.

We caught up with Choueiri ahead of the event to get a snapshot of what he is working on at State Street in terms of creating and demonstrating the value of data. He says: “I am building a data visualisation lab. Analytics and visualisation aren’t always in the remit of CDOs, but CDOs can do more to show the outcomes of good data.”

Choueiri is pitching for investment to set up the visualisation lab, which will be a large room showing several different types of data visualisation. He explains: “Part of the data labs premise is to show value. We are taking use cases from the bank, about 10. For example, we could visualise how many emails senior managers receive every day, the depth of the emails, and whether these emails could be a burden to managers. We can also see the level of communications between offices and regions.”

Choueiri and his fellow panel members will share many more ideas and provide advice on how to drive business value of data and measure that value at next week’s Data Management Summit. Places are filling up fast, so register here to ensure your place at the event.
