Talking Reference Data with Andrew Delaney: Putting it All Together

After several months of shoe-leather and elbow grease, the agenda for our March 6 Data Management Summit at London’s America Square conference centre is snapping into place. Our rapidly changing marketplace is yielding much food for thought, and plenty of fodder for some good debates.

Helping us set the scene at the kickoff this time around is our old friend Rupert Brown, IB CTO Lead Architect, UBS Investment Bank, who’ll give a keynote on Enterprise Architectures: Creating a Data Map of the Financial Enterprise. Rupert’s presentation will provide a great backdrop for our subsequent panel discussion on Building a Flexible Enterprise Architecture, a key requirement for today’s financial institution if it is to respond rapidly and properly to emerging opportunities or changing market conditions.

Rupert will be joined by experts Colin Gibson, Head of Data Architecture, Markets Division, at Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), and Amir Halfon, Chief Technologist, Financial Services, at MarkLogic, as the panel discusses approaches to design and implementation of a data architecture that meets this crucial requirement.

Our next panel looks at drivers, specifically regulation and risk management / reporting. The list of regulatory requirements impacting financial institutions’ approach to data management seems to be growing daily, with FATCA, Dodd-Frank, Solvency II, MiFID II and Finrep high on firms’ lists of priorities. Compliance is not always straightforward, and penalties for failure can be significant. Meanwhile, regulators and senior management are seeking to minimise risk everywhere.

It’s a lot of ground to cover, but our panel is up to the challenge of exploring how these elements affect how firms manage their enterprise data and regulatory reporting. Expect some serious expertise from Nigel Webb, Programme Manager – Conduct Risk, at Royal Bank of Scotland; Ian Webster, Managing Director, EMEA, Axioma; and Laurent Martinet, European Senior Clients and Regulators Relationship Manager, at Bloomberg LP.

Managed services is a theme we’ve heard a lot about this past year or so, and DMS will feature its fair share of discussion around this topic. We’ll kick off with a late-morning panel – Managed Reference Data Services and the Utility Model – then hear from a keynote speaker on whey Utilities are the Only Way Forward.

The ideal of a utility-based reference data model is almost Utopian: Greater functionality at lower cost. But how real is the dream, and how are existing initiatives faring? We’ve brought together some leading-edge protagonists to report on their findings as they engage with the market on this concept: Adam Cottingham, Vice President, Data Management Services, SmartStream Technologies; Martijn Groot, Director, Euroclear; Neill Vanlint, Managing Director, EMEA and Asia, GoldenSource. We’ll round out our utilities discussion with a presentation from Philippe Chambadal, CEO, SmartStream.

After lunch, our first ‘power panel’ looks at the topic of data management for senior management – Reporting for the C-Suite: Data Management for Enterprise & Risk Analytics. Regulation may be driving many data management initiatives, but senior management increasingly sees the benefit of implementing the kinds of data governance, process and control new rules are requiring. How can data managers ensure the quality and integrity of data needed for enterprise and risk analysis and reporting?

We’ll be hearing from some seasoned practitioners on this important topic: Robert Hofstetter, Director and Head Securities Markets, Data and Control, Bank J. Safra Sarasin Ltd.; Brian Sentance, CEO, Xenomorph; Sally Hinds, Director and Co-Founder, Data Management Consulting Services

Heading back to familiar territory, the next session looks at Entity Data Management, LEIs & EMIR. EMIR – and its requirement for firms to clean up their entity data acts – is upon us. This panel looks at what firms are doing to meet the new EU requirement and is the global Legal Entity Identifier helping?

Helping get to the bottom of the requirement – and the industry response – will be Chris Johnson, Head of Product Management, Market Data Services, HSBC Securities Services; Jelmer Brons, Product Manager for Enterprise Data Feeds, S&P Capital IQ; and Steve Goldstein, Co-founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Alacra.

Finally, following a networking coffee break, we’ll move to sponsor workshops, kicking off with A Radical Move for Transparency: Collaborative Enterprise Understanding. Darius Clayton, Change Specialist and Founding Partner, and Patrick Dewald, Data Governance Architect and Founding Partner, both of Diaku, will look at how to collaboratively build an integrated business view with data at its heart, bridge IT and business communities, and deliver business benefits faster and more confidently.

After a full day, we’ll repair to the comfort of the America Square Lounge for some much-needed refreshment – and doubtless hours more debate – courtesy of the kindly people of Xenomorph.

We hope you can join us.
