Kx Partners with Magnitude Simba to Deliver an Improved ODBC

Kx, a division of FD that incorporates the kdb+ time-series database to deliver high-performance, in-memory computing and streaming analytics, has partnered with Magnitude Simba, a provider of innovation in data connectivity solutions such as Magnitude Gateway. Kx and Magnitude Simba seek to provide kdb+ customers with an improved Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) interface to external data directly from kdb+ using a fully featured and certified connecter.

For over 20 years, the ODBC has been the standard method for applications to interact with external data. Bayntun says that the ODBC evolved into a standard way for databases to interact with applications that needed access to data. The partnership aims to offer an ODBC/kdb+ driver that would be able to increase the robust nature of the interface.

Throughout stages of the ODBC’s development, Simba’s team have collaborated with developers at Kx and with Kx customers to gather direct feedback concerning what users would like to see in an ODBC driver.

Jeff Bayntun, solutions engineering manager at Magnitude Software, says: “Kx reached out to Simba last year because they wanted to improve their customer experience when using tools like Tableau, or Excel, or Power BI. Simba has been building data connectivity for applications like that for over twenty years, and they had heard about us by reputation, and it was a really good fit for us to put those type of access capabilities on top of their database.”
