Financial Data Management Event Offers Practical Insight

Osney Media’s Financial Data Management conference in London next month promises to yield some insight into issues surrounding management of information within the financial services marketplace.

Osney Media believes the key data management question for financial institutions has shifted in the past 12 months from “Should a data management project be implemented?” to “How will this system support the business?” The London event, on April 26 and 27, may offer some answers.

The lineup of presenters includes faces old and new, with stalwarts of the London real-time data management scene rubbing shoulders with relative newcomers focusing on reference data issues.

Speakers scheduled for the event include: Dominic Shine, head of IT products and development, Henderson Global Investors; Cecilia Holden, enterprise data standards, Merrill Lynch; Iman Szeto, vice president, worldwide data support, Northern Trust; Tim Rowe, secondary markets policy, markets division, Financial Services Authority; Neil Innes, head of data management, Deutsche Bank; Robert Morgan, information security manager, BNP Paribas London; Anthony Kirby, secretary, Reference Data User Group; and Michael Jameson, global BCP manager, AXA Investment Management.

A-Team’s Angela Wilbraham and London Stock Exchange’s Mark Husler will also be discussing corporate actions at a free, pre-show breakfast briefing at 8.30am on the 27th, sponsored by Eagle Investment Systems.

Following a half-day introductory segment on April 26, the main event is split into two separate streams. Of most interest to Reference Data Review readers will be Stream B, which will focus on reference data management issues. Stream A’s focus is on enterprisewide data management for asset management companies.

The first half-day is common to both streams and will discuss key concepts surrounding data management, define common terms and discuss the complexity of implementing a data management system.

The two streams will share an afternoon talk by Tim Rowe of the FSA on the potential impact of the new Investment Service Directive financial data management. Dennis Slattery, chief executive of Digital Innovation (DI), will run an end-of-day workshop on April 26; Slattery is the designer of the Integral Asset Management Enterprise Data Repository.

Stream B kicks off with Iman Szeto of Northern Trust talking about reference data instrument identification, followed by RDUG’s Anthony Kirby discussing the role of corporate actions and compliance in reference data.

Cecilia Holden of Merrill Lynch will end the morning, with a discussion on technology budgets and their affect on reference data, with real-life examples drawing on her firm’s experiences in this area.

The afternoon starts with a case study from Neil Innes of Deutsche Bank. Innes will provide an update on the bank’s recent reference data programme, which encapsulates multiple information streams, from instrument to client data

Finally, Colin Wright, chairman of the Information Providers User Group (IPUG), will round out the afternoon with a presentation on identifier licensing. He will talk about the London Stock Exchange and SEDOL charging as well as other national numbering agencies.

Over in Stream A, Michael Jameson of Axa Investment Managers starts off the day with a talk on ‘Putting data management issues into an Asset Management context.’ He’ll be followed by a benchmarking session led by John Best, executive member, IPUG. Prior to this segment, delegates will be surveyed on the data management projects they are currently working on, plan to work on, and their experience with information providers. This will give participants a chance to compare their projects with their peers.

The morning session for Stream A will be finished with a talk on evaluating and reviewing the value of information services.

In the afternoon, a case study from Henderson Global Investors’ Dominic Shine, who’ll focus on the completion of a central repository at the firm. The repository was implemented alongside a programme of improvements to data quality and the rationalisation of data feeds into the firm and out into applications.

Stream A will end with Robert Morgan of BNP Paribas London discussing the ramifications of the upcoming Basel II risk management guidelines on the industry.

The event is sponsored by BI-SAM Technologies, Eagle Investment Systems, Financial Models Corp., Odyssey Asset Management Systems and Soliton Inc.
