Connectivity and Co-Lo Roundup: CFN, Colt, Interxion, SIX, Thomson Reuters …

It’s TradeTech time in chilly and soggy London (though I am happily writing this from sunny, 90-degree Austin) – which means a deluge of press releases that is a Big Data problem in itself. Here are some highlights, focusing on connectivity, co-lo and a bit of cloud.

CFN Services – is moving into Europe, starting with deployment of its Alpha Platform On-Demand, its financial markets public cloud, at proximity locations in London and Frankfurt. Next up will be rolling out connectivity and managed services in Madrid, Zurich, Milan, Stockholm and Moscow.

Colt – has taken advantage of NYSE Euronext’s more liberal connectivity policy for its Basildon, UK data centre (not requiring SFTI access) and rolled out connectivity between it and Deutsche Borse’s Frankfurt data centre, reducing latency over existing services by 10%, it claims.

Interxion – has announced that it is now an access point to Bats Chi-X Europe, which is located at Equinix LD4, on the other side of London. Of course, Interxion used to host Bats, until its takeover of Chi-X, which is what triggered the move to LD4.

SIX Swiss Exchange – has rolled out co-lo services in Zurich, leveraging Equinix’s data centre. The move coincides with the launch of its new, fast, Nasdaq OMX Inet matching engine. It is citing average round-trip latency of just 37 microseconds, and there is more information here on how that is measured.

Thomson Reuters – switched on its Elektron hosting managed services offering in Brazil, in close proximity to the BM&F BOVESPA exchange.

Determinism is the New Speed: Why High Performance Trading Infrastructure is Being Redefined Around Provability

The definition of high performance in trading infrastructure is shifting. Raw speed, once the key benchmark, is increasingly being subsumed into a broader set of requirements around determinism, provability and architectural simplicity. For firms operating in fragmented, event-driven and increasingly automated markets, the competitive edge is no longer measured in nanoseconds alone, it lies in...

It’s hard to believe that as early as the 2009 Group of 20 summit in Pittsburgh the industry had recognised the need for greater transparency as part of a wider package of reforms aimed at mitigating the systemic risk posed by the OTC derivatives market. That realisation ultimately led to the Dodd Frank Act, and...
