A-Team Group’s inaugural RegTech Summit for Capital Markets in London attracted registrations from over 400 capital markets participants, included leading speakers in the regtech space and showcased start-up regtechs with automated solutions to regulatory compliance challenges. The event also hosted towards 20 key RegTech sponsors.

The conference was hosted by Andrew Delaney, President and Chief Content Officer at A-Team Group, and opened with a keynote from Sophia Bantanidis, EMEA Head of Regulatory and Market Strategy at Citi Transaction Services, who gave a presentation on the state of regtech and how it may develop going forward.

Bantanidis discussed the potential of regtech, noting its initial use in areas such as regulatory reporting, Know Your Customer (KYC), risk management, controls automation, market surveillance and behavioural analytics. She also issued a caution about the challenges of regtech for large financial firms, including a focus on single point solutions, questions around scalability, and compliance buy-in.

Other keynotes during the Summit included an interview on the challenges of the regtech revolution for the compliance function between Delaney and Christian Krohn, Head of European Regulatory Reform at Standard Chartered Bank. A Thomson Reuters keynote interview discussed regtech in the broader risk ecosystem, and a keynote from Joseph Turso, vice president of product management at The SmartStream Reference Data Utility (RDU), detailed the reference data challenges of Markets in Financial Instruments Directive II (MiFID II).

A distinguished user panel answered questions about how to overcome barriers to regtech, such as making the business case and getting compliance on board, while a fast-paced product showcase set out the capabilities of regtech start-ups Onfido, encompass, Alyne and RegTek.

Considering regulatory compliance that could be eased by regtech solutions, the Summit dedicated time to requirements and responses to the most pressing forthcoming regulations, particularly MiFID II, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Fundamental Review of the Trading Book (FRTB).

The RegTech Summit for Capital Markets in London this month, and in New York City next month, combines the content of A-Team’s established Data Management Review and Intelligent Trading Technology news services, webinars, handbooks and conferences to give participants insight into all aspects of the regulatory landscape and potential solutions for their regulatory problems.

Reflecting on the Summit, Delaney commented: “The Summit had a real buzz. The content was excellent and it was good to see so many delegates interacting with speakers and sponsors, and taking away some great ideas they can implement in their organisations.”

A-Team’s next RegTech Summit and RegTech Awards will be in New York City on Thursday November 16, 2017.
