Chainlink’s CustodySync Boosts TradFi Custody with DeFi Lending

Chainlink Labs has launched Chainlink CustodySync to synchronise regulated digital asset custodians with decentralised finance (DeFi) lending markets. The platform aims to bridge the gap between approximately $700 billion in digital assets held under custody and the more than $80 billion available in DeFi deposits, allowing institutions to access on-chain liquidity without moving assets out of their secure custody arrangements.

Anchorage Digital Bank has joined the initiative as the official launch partner. Through its Atlas Collateral Management product, Anchorage Digital will work alongside lending protocols to provide an institutional tri-party framework, acting as an appointed collateral agent to facilitate core functions on behalf of the protocols. The partnership is intended to allow institutional clients to keep their assets within regulated custody while safely engaging with global DeFi markets.

Historically, connecting custodied assets to on-chain lending has faced barriers due to interoperability issues and risk policies. When custodians and DeFi protocols track collateral status, prices, or loan-to-value (LTV) ratios independently, data misalignments and latency can cause false liquidations or delayed actions that result in financial losses.

CustodySync addresses these friction points by coordinating a qualified custodian’s collateral management system – the source of truth for balances – with an on-chain lending market across the full lifecycle of a loan. The system operates through the following sequence:

Collateral Preservation: Assets remain with the custodian, and balances are published on chain to provide a verifiable record.

On-Chain Representation: A transfer-restricted receipt token is posted to the lending market to represent the custodied assets, carrying no claim on the underlying assets outside the integration.

Direct Borrowing: Assets are moved from the lending market to the borrower in a single transaction, with all borrow, repayment, and interest metrics automatically updated in the custodian’s records.

Unified Pricing: The lending market and the custodian’s off-chain systems read identical values from the same Chainlink oracle infrastructure, so both sides calculate LTV from the same data.

Managed Liquidations: If a loan breaches its liquidation threshold, the appointed collateral agent executes the sale through its own process. CustodySync records the committed sale proceeds on chain to stabilise the position during settlement, executing the final settlement via a single atomic transaction.

“Institutions should not have to choose between qualified custody and on-chain liquidity. Through Atlas Collateral Management and our collaboration with Chainlink, Anchorage Digital clients keep their assets in regulated custody while we monitor loan health and manage margin and liquidation across the full lifecycle of the loan,” says Nathan McCauley, CEO and Co-Founder, Anchorage Digital.

CustodySync’s underlying architecture integrates multiple components from Chainlink’s broader product platform into a unified solution to bridge the gap between traditional off-chain financial custody and on-chain smart contract environments. These components include:

1) The Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE) – The CRE serves as the core automation and coordination layer for the entire lending lifecycle. It continuously scans the qualified custodian’s internal collateral management system for updates.

This engine automatically triggers the corresponding on-chain actions based on verified participant authorisations and writes loan activity, interest accruals and repayments back to the custodian’s ledger to maintain a unified record.

2) Unified Pricing System – To ensure that both off- and off-chain systems are fed from an identical source, two Chainlink components are leveraged:

  • Chainlink Data Feeds – Delivers reliable, aggregated price data directly on chain for the DeFi lending protocol to calculate real-time LTV ratios.
  • Chainlink Data Streams – Streams the same high-speed price data directly to the custodian’s off-chain systems.

3) Verification and Tokenisation Layer – The architecture ensures assets are independently auditable without sacrificing institutional security policies:

  • Chainlink Proof of Reserve (PoR) – Automatically publishes the custodian’s physical vault balances directly on chain, providing a transparent, cryptographic record of collateral backing.
  • Transfer-Restricted Receipt Tokens – A specialised token minted and posted to the on-chain lending market to represent the vault assets. This receipt carries no claim on the underlying assets outside the context of the specific lending integration, preventing unauthorised asset movement.

4) Standardised Smart Contract Suite – The on-chain side of the infrastructure relies on a framework of uniform smart contracts designed by Chainlink. Deployed directly by the participating lending markets or designated risk curators, these contracts govern the rules under which collateral deposits, borrowing and settlement occur, creating a predictable risk framework for institutional participants.

Chainlink suggests the CustodySync has benefits for both custodians and lenders:

  • For Qualified Custodians – It provides a faster time to market by offering a ready-made standard instead of custom integrations. And it lowers operational overhead while ensuring that clients’ assets never leave the custodian’s control.
  • For Lending Markets and Risk Curators – It unlocks access to new institutional demand for capital that was previously locked out of DeFi. Furthermore, it provides independent, verifiable data from a neutral third party and establishes a consistent risk framework built on existing pricing infrastructure.

Fundamentally, CustodySync connects the TradFi and DeFi spaces to the benefit of both. As such, it represents a shift towards a more unified global financial system, allowing a larger portion of the digital asset custody market to safely unlock its productive potential within on-chain finance.
