The IDX Roadshow Rolls into Town

June in London means it’s time for IDX – the International Derivatives Expo, the Futures Industry Association’s conference focusing on regulatory and technology issues facing that particular segment of the marketplace.

We managed to stop by and say hi to some friends and clients, and savour the atmosphere of this microcosm of the Chicago market. The big difference, of course, was the ubiquity of Eurex, complete with its own Eurex Courtyard in the courtyard of the Brewery, where industry types could hang, check their email and enjoy the balmy London weather.

Inside we were happy to run into some loyal clients: Fidessa, Itiviti and others. The main conference room in the Porter Tun room hosted a bunch of usual suspects, TradingScreen and Trading Technologies among them, as well as some newcomers – exchanges from faraway places and interesting startups like Curve Global Markets.

Away from the exhibit floor, we caught the end of a fascinating panel discussion on how MiFID II is driving the need for a new data model within the financial transaction chain. Discussion focused on the usefulness of the ISIN code, the potential (or otherwise) of the LEI (that’s the Legal Entity Identifier, for the uninitiated), and the applicability of the ISO 20022 standard for transaction reporting to ARMs (not necessary, according to panellist David Nowell of UnaVista).

As usual, it was great to catch up with the movers and shakers in this neck of the electronic trading woods. The event is now in its ninth year; we look forward to the milestone 10th edition next year.
