Troy, Michigan-based simulation technologies provider Altair has acquired data intelligence specialist Datawatch – along with its Panopticon visualization platform – for $176 million in cash. The move is aimed at bolstering Altair’s offerings in the generic data science and analytics segment, where Datawatch has strong offerings in data prep, data prediction, and real-time high-volume data visualization.

For capital markets users, Datawatch is probably best known for its Panopticon suite of visualization tools. Datawatch acquired Panopticon Software AB of Sweden in August 2013, and recently made Panopticon Streams widely available to Datawatch clients.

Altair plans to apply its patented licensing model to Datawatch’s product set, including Panopticon. According to Dave Simon, SVP of Corporate Talent and Communications at Altair, “The software licensing model is patented and unique — by purchasing a license, you have access to all the units in a portfolio. The average Altair customer uses fourteen pieces of software, so it’s very frictionless.”
