In this video, Michael Curry, President of Data Modernisation at Rocket Software, describes a significant maturity in data management, moving beyond simple storage to observing the end-to-end flow of information. Modern practices now emphasise shared definitions, cataloguing, and clear ownership to maintain quality across the organization.
A central theme is the strategic shift from “data protectionism” – locking data away for compliance – to “data leverage”. Curry argues that utilising data is now existential, with companies pivoting to extract value through AI rather than just securing assets.
Regarding business outcomes, the focus has expanded from risk reduction to driving top-line growth and “finding alpha” in capital markets. Specifically, Generative AI is being used to unlock unstructured data, drastically improving customer experiences.
However, organisational inertia remains a primary inhibitor, often causing data quality issues. To overcome hesitancy and prove ROI, Curry advises linking investments to specific metrics like improved conversion rates or reduced churn, rather than generic storage savings. Finally, achieving AI readiness requires creating a documented “ground truth” by cataloguing data and ensuring completeness across isolated systems.
