The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) will this month launch its highly anticipated DTCC Tokenization Service, introducing on-chain capabilities to an asset pool valued at approximately $30 trillion. According to an update shared via X on 16th October, the initiative will debut with 25 initial securities available for tokenisation, each backed 1:1 by traditional securities held securely at the DTCC’S Depository Trust Company (DTC) unit.

When it goes live, the service will support select large-cap names from Russell 1000 Equities, select Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), and a chosen set of US Treasury bills, notes, and bonds. The digital assets will carry the same CUSIP numbers, rights, and investor protections as traditional book-entry securities, with the official books and records remaining under DTC’s administration.
Market participants looking to create tokenised assets will be able to place conversion orders via a user interface or API between 2am and 6pm ET on business days, with processing times targeted at 15 minutes or less.
The service, which is based on the DTCC’s ComposerX application suite, incorporates the DTCC’s Compliance Aware Token Framework (CATF) and so supports programmable compliance. With compliance rules built into token smart contract code using the ERC-3643 standard, ERC-20 compatible tokens may be transferred 24/7 and intra-chain but only between DTC-registered wallets.
Initial blockchain platforms supported will be Digital Asset’s Canton Network and the DTCC’s own private Hyperledger Besu (Ethereum) network. Looking ahead to 2027, the DTCC plans to expand the ecosystem’s infrastructure and asset availability. Already planned is support for two public networks: Stellar and Circle’s recently launched Arc.
Operational upgrades on the roadmap include enhanced security controls including single sign-on and maker-checker validation workflows, alongside a fully consolidated stock record that merges book-entry and on-chain positions into a single view.
There are also plans to onboard a broader group of eligible DTC participants and expand eligible assets, including constituents of the full Russell 1000 index, additional ETFs, and broader Treasury instruments. Advanced financial capabilities scheduled for future deployment include digital cash integrations, on-chain netting for settlement and collateral, and expanded asset servicing specifically tailored for equity and ETF corporate actions.
