Bloomberg Provides Real-Time Access to B-Pipe on Google Cloud

Bloomberg has collaborated with Google to enable mutual customers to access B-Pipe, Bloomberg’s real-time market data feed, through Google Cloud.

The collaboration with Google provides customers with cloud access to real-time market data and analytics, for 35 million instruments, over 330 exchanges and 80 billion ticks a day. Bloomberg claims that it is the only financial data provider to enable cloud-native access to tick-for-tick data.

Although Bloomberg’s B-Pipe feed has been available on the cloud for some time, through AWS, the collaboration with Google marks the next stage in the company’s cloud strategy.

Says Cory Albert, Global Head of Cloud Strategy for Bloomberg’s Enterprise Data division: “As our customers move to the cloud, we definitely see it as an opportunity in the real-time space,” he says. “We want to be the primary provider of real-time market data, analytics, and derived data, to anybody that wants to run cloud workloads. B-Pipe’s availability on Google Cloud is very similar to what we’ve done with AWS, the real difference just comes with how customers leverage the cloud provider’s services. For example, we’re seeing people leveraging services like Google Pub/Sub to inject real-time financial data into their analytics.”

In addition to streaming B-Pipe market data, Bloomberg offers additional services natively in Google Cloud, including textual news and news analytics, new issues notifications, and real-time volatility. Bloomberg’s Liquidity Assessment tool (LQA), which provides a quantitative evaluation of market liquidity across multiple asset classes, is also accessible as part of B-Pipe on Google Cloud.

“As data scientists look to embed more sophisticated analytics within front-office applications, they need seamless access to high-quality real-time data in the cloud without compromising reliability, performance or cost,” says Albert. “Our continued dedication to expanding Bloomberg’s data availability in the cloud has already provided our clients with the resiliency and elasticity they need to fuel their most critical applications. This new, native connectivity with Google Cloud will further provide mutual clients with an enhanced and simplified data experience, making the data immediately usable.”

The Google Cloud B-Pipe connectivity model uses Bloomberg’s Open API (BLPAPI), which can provide consistency and resiliency for hybrid and multi-cloud deployment strategies, helping to ensure new client data applications are automatically cloud-ready, says Albert.

“Customers want more flexibility with running their applications,” he says. “Whether that’s cloud, hybrid, on-prem or hosted, we’re starting to see both vendors and end customers wanting to leverage these APIs.”
