J.P. Morgan has officially launched its JPM Coin on Ethereum , expanding the availability of its digital cash solution to the world’s largest Layer 1 public blockchain network.
The expansion is spearheaded by Kinexys by J.P. Morgan, the banking giant’s dedicated blockchain business unit, and T=the move aims to provide institutional clients with broader, native on-chain cash liquidity that directly interfaces with the digital assets and counterparties they already transact with.Ethereum represents the second public blockchain to support JPM Coin, following its initial debut last year on Coinbase’s Base, Ethereum Layer 2 network. By deploying on the Ethereum Mainnet, J.P. Morgan taps into a highly established ecosystem known for its vast liquidity and volume of tokenised real-world.
“Tokenised financial infrastructure is no longer theoretical,” says Emma Landriault, Global Head of Kinexys Labs. “Issuing JPM Coin first on Base and now on Ethereum is a meaningful step towards providing our institutional clients with multi-chain optionality for moving wholesale money across both the web3 and traditional finance ecosystems.”
While JPM Coin acts as a digital dollar on public ledger infrastructure, it differs fundamentally from more common stablecoins:
- Tokenised Deposit vs. Reserve Asset:Stablecoins are typically issued by private companies and backed by a pool of separate reserve assets (like corporate debt or Treasury) held at various banks. In contrast, JPM Coin is a tokenised deposit. It represents actual wholesale commercial bank money held directly in a liability account on J.P. Morgan’s balance sheet.
- Institutional Security:Because it is integrated directly into J.P. Morgan’s traditional payment infrastructure, institutional clients can execute peer-to-peer transfers inside the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) ecosystem without relying on third-party crypto custodians or risking stablecoin de-pegging events. The launch further cements J.P. Morgan’s prominent role in institutional blockchain adoption. Its Kinexys unit has already processed more than $4 trillion in cumulative transactions since its inception in November 2024, maintaining an average daily transaction volume of roughly $7 billion.
By embedding JPM Coin natively into Ethereum, the bank expects to unlock new programmatic treasury functions for corporate clients, enabling automated, friction-free financial decision-making directly from their on-chain wallets.
That J.P. Morgan chose to expand its coin to Ethereum is a recognition of how established that public blockchain remains in the financial services space, even as competitors including Avalanche, Solana and Stellar continue to increase their financial use cases and users.
