Data Opportunities Abound in Migration to the Cloud: Webinar Preview

The shift from on-premises data management to the cloud is a huge undertaking that requires an enormous amount of planning.

The benefits, though, are potentially even greater; after all, why else would an organisation go through the process of lifting and shifting the most vital ingredient in their operational arsenal?

The move to cloud-based services is not only attractive because of the opportunities they offer organisations to scale their operations. The act of moving itself can bring benefits. Cloud migration gives organisations the opportunity to put their data estates in full working order, enabling them to prise the fullest value from it, according to Andrea DeSosa, Global Head of Capital Markets at GTM.

“Cloud migration is often treated as the destination, but it’s really just the enabler,” DeSosa told Data Management Insight. “The firms that will lead capital markets over the next five years aren’t the ones that move fastest – they’re the ones that use the migration to make their proprietary data discoverable, governed and portable.”

Expert Panel

The advantages presented by cloud migration – and those that can be reaped once data has been fully shifted – form the theme of A-Team Group’s next webinar, with a curated panel of experts looking not only at the nuts and bolts of why cloud migration might benefit organisations but also at ways to prosper from the actual move itself.

The webinar, entitled Cloud Migration for Scalability and Innovation, held on September 22, will bring together a panel of practitioners drawn from financial institutions and vendors alike. Along with DeSosa, the panel will comprise Suemee Shin, Head of Enterprise Data Office Standards, Controls and Governance at US Bank; Tim Anderson, Director of Tick History at LSEG Data and Analytics; and Adrian Murray, Head of Product, Pricing and Reference Services – Data & Feeds at LSEG Data and Analytics.

Data Management Insight Editor Mark McCord will moderate.

Extracting Value

Ensuring data is in good order before migration will hold organisations in good stead once it arrives on-cloud, said DeSosa.

“Everyone has access to the same models; the durable advantage comes from the data only you own, and this session is about how to unlock it under the governance and residency requirements our industry demands.”

That said, the process of migration itself has to be executed with great care and precision lest data lands in a disorderly way and prevents the exploitation of cloud’s near-limitless opportunities.

LSEG Data and Analytics’ Murray stressed the importance of good data arriving into the cloud environment.

“The objective is never simply to move a firm’s infrastructure to the cloud,” he told Data Management Insight. “Success should be measured by the value unlocked once its workflows are in the cloud.

“The real value begins when you stop moving data and start using it. For AI workflows, cloud deployments are most effective when the models rely on data with the proper context, governance and transparency.”

The 50 minutes-long webinar will touch on a wide range of issues associated with the migration of data to the cloud. Among the topics to be discussed will be:

  • Hybrid or single cloud architecture? The safety considerations in relying on just one cloud operator
  • Regulations and security: How can organisations ensure the resilience and operational safety of cloud-based operations
  • The scalability conundrum: Dealing with the increased data governance complexity that comes with operational upscaling
  • Tracing change: Keeping on top of metadata and lineage management as data challenges escalate
  • Unlocking potential: How to make the most of cloud capabilities to drive innovation

During the webinar, audience members will be given the opportunity to ask questions, and they will also be polled by A-Team Group for their input into ongoing discussions.

Why Sanctions Compliance Is Becoming an Intelligence-Led Discipline

By Theodora Papadimitropoulou, Head of Global Product Strategy, GTM at Dun & Bradstreet. For years, sanctions compliance was closely associated with a single task, running a counterparty’s name against the relevant lists, checking for a match and acting if required. How much that tells you, though, depends heavily on the provider and the data behind...
