Ataccama Signals Product Focus with New CEO Appointment

Ataccama has appointed its former chief technology officer Martin Zahumensky as its new chief executive in a move that highlights the company’s focus on products in the next few years.

Zahumensky replaces Mike McKee, an operations-oriented leader who had sat in the top seat since 2023 and helped to drive the Boston-based data trust company’s growth and the launch of its agentic platform.

By placing an executive steeped in the company’s products business at its head, Ataccama is replicating the aggressive business model of startups, with a focus on creating and fine-tuning tools in response to the rapid transformation seen in the financial data space over recent months.

“It’s an across-the-industry kind of a thing, mostly driven by AI,” Zahumensky told Data Management Insight. “The changes in technology in the last year are probably bigger than last 30 years.

“Having the people who can understand where the whole world is going, how AI can potentially reshape the world and the software tools we have been using for decades is super important for each and every company to be successful at this moment.”

Leadership Pedigree

Zahumensky has played a “pivotal” role since Ataccama was formed in 2007, the company said at his appointment. His career began at Accenture, where he worked on data integration projects. At Adastra, he was part of the team that contracted Ataccama’s first data management tools for banking, insurance, telecommunications, the public sector and other industries.

He is no stranger to running a data company. He co-founded data monetisation company Instarea before co-creating and leading Market Locator. He has led Ataccama’s product and engineering strategy during the company’s shift to AI-native data management and the launch of its Ataccama ONE Agentic platform.

He comes highly regarded. Dewey Awad, partner at Bain Capital Tech Opportunities and a member of Ataccama’s board of directors said Zahumensky “knows Ataccama’s customers, its technology, and its culture better than anyone, and he has been the driving force behind its AI transformation”.

Sales to AI

Zahumensky characterises his past six years at the company as a time in which his role evolved from “selling products to co-creating” them as well as driving AI internally within Ataccama. His role now, he said, is to identify what Ataccama’s customer needs and then build the tools to meet them.

“It’s more about refining how our customers are thinking about data management, where the data management will be going in upcoming few years,” he said. “A lot of the problems we have been solving for the past 20 years are still there, they are just being amplified even more with AI because AI basically acts as a human on steroids.”

Zahumensky explained that Ataccama sees data readiness as a core challenge for financial institutions as they implement their AI programmes. Helping clients get to the stage where they can install and operate AI safely and effectively is, therefore, a key focus of the company.

That includes providing the tools to ingest, cleanse and distribute data across enterprises so that their agents can operate smoothly and without fear of inaccurate or hallucinated outputs. An important part of that process, he added, is the effective reformatting of unstructured data into a form that can be readily used within systems.

While these are processes that have been necessary for many years, the advent of agents has intensified the challenges and required a more robust data trust solution.

“The way people are consuming data is changing a lot. Before, we were used to look on a report and make a decision, based on a lot of knowledge. Figuring out how you can [do that] in the age of the agents, where agents are deciding on their own and automating the processes, is where we are focusing the product at the moment,” he said.

Pipeline Span

Ataccama is also placing emphasis on the other end of the AI pipeline and providing validation tools for AI outputs to ensure the agents are operating optimally. The full pipeline offering – which will cover everything from data cataloguing, data observability, data quality, master data management and reference data management –  is one for which clients have shown a strong preference over point solutions he said.

There are, of course, challenges for Ataccama. Regulatory obligations highlight the importance of data security and along with the rising competitive value of proprietary data, many organisations are looking to lock down their data management capabilities in-house, potentially eroding the appeal of third-party service providers. As a result, market differentiation has become a key battleground as technology, models and tools have become commoditised and firms can instal many of them alone.

Nevertheless opportunities abound. In the works is a plan to build a SaaS cloud-native solution that will enable clients to scale their AI workloads, as well as building out its Ataccama ONE Agentic platform and implementing a model context protocol (MCP) connector to enable them to work together and with broader data sources.

For Zahumensky, the key opportunity comes in the proliferation of agents. To keep them working optimally and to keep them in check organisations are having to invest in good data practices and building semantic layers to instruct them. All of these demands play into the hands of Ataccama, Zahumensky said.

“Where we differentiate is we work in these complex ecosystems with tons of different source systems that we can apply the same checks on and make sure all of them can be trusted, not just applying it somewhere in the warehouse,” he said. “That is where a lot of opportunity and challenges will be created over the upcoming couple of years.”
