ASG Develops Mobius Content Services to Meet Regulatory and Business Needs

ASG Technologies is developing its Mobius content services to help market participants comply with increasing regulation around personal data, and gain a clear overview of all their customer information and how it flows across the organisation.

Mobius captures and manages content throughout its lifecycle, executes workflows, and governs information across federated repositories for a single view of enterprise content. Combined with other ASG solutions, such as data intelligence and text analytics, it goes further, tracking data anomalies, supporting fraud detection, and providing an understanding of the value of data.

A new take on personal data

This latter capability is key to a new take on personal data that has been presented in a bill to the US Congress. The bill – Designing Accounting Safeguards to Help Broaden Oversight And Regulations on Data (Dashboard) Act – was introduced in June of this year and is initially targeted at giants such as Google and Facebook, requiring companies with 100 million or more monthly users to disclose the type of data they collect and put a monetary value on the data. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that, if successful, it could hit large global banks and later trickle down to other financial organisations that are big users of personal data. For individuals, the bill suggests that if the value of their personal data to the service provider is greater than the value of the service to them, they could opt out.

Rob Perry, vice president of product marketing at ASG, comments: “There is no clear action at federal level on this yet, but it could be a big issue in data privacy and the beginning of personal data value.”

Meeting the requirements of GDPR and CCPA

Whatever the outcome of this US initiative, Mobius’s content and records management is already widely used by clients to comply with EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It is also geared to help Californian citizens when the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) comes into force in January 2020.

The solution captures, governs and delivers digital content and assets generated by people, applications and machines at web-scale volumes. The information can be structured, and since earlier this year unstructured, and policies are applied at ingestion so that the data is managed throughout its lifecycle. Metadata is extracted from the data to provide a granular view of content such as documents and who they relate to, while a metadata glossary and data repository are used to track how data and other content flow.

The technology supports regulatory data retention rules and allows firms, for example, to identify any customer data that should legally be deleted, answer individuals’ requests to erase data – and activate workflow technology introduced this spring in Mobius 9.1 to notify everyone within the firm that needs to delete the data, and identify personal data that isn’t being used and should not be kept. Perry says: “There is increasing interest around records management for compliance, particularly for regulations such as GDPR that has huge financial fines for non-compliance.”

Business use cases

As well as supporting regulatory compliance, Mobius can be used in combination with ASG’s Data Miner to gather personal data and create a structured view of the data that can then be analysed using text analytics to understand the value of the data. Data intelligence can also be applied to scan all structured and unstructured data, and track any changes to data in a data inventory.

Mobius is architected for deployment on cloud, on premise or in hybrid configurations. A containerised version is being developed to provide relatively easy and quick deployment, as well as a software-as-a-service implementation that is designed to provide easier access to content services in the cloud as well as extended functionality. Perry says: “As firms look at putting data repositories in the cloud, there is often a lot of consolidation to do. Mobius solves this problem as it is highly scalable and allows federation using APIs. There are also APIs for additional capabilities beyond finding and retrieving data.” As ASG continues to develop Mobius, its focus is on firms’ increasing interest in records management for compliance, understanding both structured and unstructured data, seeing how data is shared beyond its origin and disclosed to clients, and how data management can deliver business agility.
