Talking Reference Data with Andrew Delaney: DMS 2013 – On LEI and Other Data Management Challenges

Subscribe to our newsletter

Data management is critical to the challenges facing financial services and capital markets participants. Across the board, from meeting increasing regulation and getting in line behind the forthcoming legal entity identifier (LEI) to enhancing transparency and risk management, data management is key. It features in many of the issues we have covered over the past 12 months in Reference Data Review, and in our sister sites: BigDataforFinance.com  and Risk-Technology.net.

And it’ s not about to decline in importance, which is why we are excited about our March 12 Data Management Summit that will look beyond enterprise data management for performance and risk solutions.

With support from our sponsors – Bloomberg, S&P Capital IQ, MarkLogic, Smartco, GoldenSource and AIM Software – we have put together a full-day programme of expert speakers and panellists who will debate hot topics around data management and answer your questions about workplace projects, regulatory compliance, emerging technologies, businesses cases and winning budget.

Our keynote speakers – to be announced in the coming days – will detail the data challenges faced by financial institutions as they respond to competitive pressures and heightened regulatory scrutiny, offering both business and technology-based solutions fit for today and the future.

The first panel discussion will look at the on the business and regulatory drivers behind management of enterprise data, including Dodd-Frank, Solvency II, MiFID II, outsourcing and offshoring. Our panel of experts, including industry veteran and friend of A-Team John Taysom, a fellow and member of the Advanced Leadership Initiative at Harvard University, will share their views on how these drivers will shape the market and the demands they will make on market participants.

Turning to the plan for a global legal entity identifier (LEI) system that will become a practical reality as we debate it in March, Chris Johnson, head of products management, market data services, at HSBC Securities Services, will be joined by Bloomberg’s Peter Warms, who heads product development for global data and symbology, and other industry practitioners to consider best practice approaches to working within the global LEI system.

Our next panel session calls on Colin Gibson, head of architecture, markets and international banking at the Royal Bank of Scotland to deliver some pragmatic advice and strategic thinking on emerging technologies for enterprise architecture, such as big data, cloud and in-memory processing. He will be joined by Amir Halfon, chief technologist for financial services at MarkLogic, and other technology thought leaders and practitioners to map the potential and prospects of these technologies.

The afternoon conference sessions dig into the detail of specific industry requirements based on data accuracy, quality, accessibility and management. Simon Tweddle, director of the risk management department at Mizuho International, will lead a drilldown session on practical approaches to risk aggregation and be joined by other risk experts tackling the issues in this space.

A second drilldown session will consider how to optimise the data quality of valuations. Peter Jones, senior director of enterprise solutions at S&P Capital IQ, and other domain experts will share their experiences of working with clients to deliver innovative, multi-asset class valuation and pricing solutions, and answering questions on how the vendor community will support the data issues of valuations.

Finally, we’ll take a look at the pressing challenge of corporate actions automation, and how it can help mitigate risk. Among the experts whose knowledge base we’ll be tapping into is Barry Adams, vice president of corporate actions at BNY Mellon Asset Servicing.

Concurrent with the afternoon drilldown sessions, we’ll be hosting a series of Editor’s Choice Innovation Workshops. We’ve identified some particularly interesting developments over the past 12 months, and we’ve invited the people behind them to tell us all about them. We have an exciting programme lined up with some excellent speakers, including Cynthia Sachs, global head of Bloomberg Valuation Service (BVAL) product development, who will host an invitation-only session explaining BVAL’s methodology for Corporate Credit valuations and their BVAL score metric for data quality.

At the end of a full and hopefully informative day, be sure to join us at an early evening reception and share your thoughts on the day’s discussions.

The A-Team annual Data Management Summit will be held this year on Tuesday March 12 at the prestigious America Square Conference Centre in London. It is always over-subscribed, so make sure you register soon and join us for what we are sure will be an informative and inspirational day.

To get a flavour of what the A-Team Data Management Summit is all about and how it could help guide your decisions, take a look at our coverage of last year’s conference.

We are still developing the programme; if you would like to get involved, get in touch: andrew@a-teamgroup.com. We look forward to seeing you at the event.
