The economic landscape has been transformed in recent years by a combination of technological upheavals, rising cost pressures on financial institutions and a rewriting of geopolitical and trading norms.
All of these have inevitably led financial institutions to reconfigure their operations and the data processes on which they depend. The next A-Team Group Data Management Insight webinar will look at a key aspect of this transformation. On June 11, experts will gather for our event, entitled “An Agile Approach to Investment Management Platforms for Private Markets and the Total Portfolio View”.
Surging Interest
The growth of vendor offerings of private and alternative markets data underlines how important the once minority-interest corner of the investment community has become to financial institutions. Companies in including Clearwater, S&P Global and LSEG have recently released or updated products aimed at helping customers tap into a corner of the economy that Bloomberg estimates will grow 20 percent annually, and which separate data indicates will account for a third of all institutional capital allocations.
This swelling interest comes despite a host of data challenges associated with investment vehicles that include hedge funds, real estate, private equity and private credit. Free from many of the regulatory obligations faced by their listed assets- focussed counterparts, private and alternative market participants have had little historical reason to gather or tabulate data in the way that institutions’ systems can easily manage.
With such opacity and paucity of granular, complete datasets, institutional investors must allocate capital in separate data capabilities that can ingest and process information that had hitherto been stored in spreadsheets, PDFs and other unstructured sources.
Investor Caution
These challenges have prompted warnings that investors could be misled. Market voices including those of Orlando Bravo, founder of private equity firm Thoma Bravo, have urged investors to exercise caution.
“The rising interest of institutions and retail investors in private markets highlights growing capital flows into illiquid assets, echoing buyout investor Orlando Bravo’s caution about the risks retail investors may face in the future,” Catherine Baulamon, Founder and Director of Black Robin Group told Data Management Insight. “This underscores the need for intelligent modular platforms and a total portfolio view to ensure transparency and sound risk management.”
Traditionally, portfolio management systems have focussed on listed and other liquid assets. With asset managers now needing to include private and alternative markets in their workflows, they are looking to update their systems to offer a total view of their portfolio that can calculate the correlations between a border sets of asset classes. These and other topics will be covered in the webinar. Joining Baulamon on the panel will be Gurprit Singh, Global Head of Data and Analytics at Partners Capital, and Neal Naidoo, Head of IMP Product Development at Rimes Technologies. The webinar will be moderated by A-Team Group Editor Sarah Underwood.
Among the topics they’ll discuss will be:
- How creating a Total Portfolio View can drive exposure management
- Why investors are adding private markets to their balanced portfolios
- What data and analytics they need to participate in alternative investment markets
- How investment management firms are reacting to the need for a total customer view
- Practical approaches to selecting and implementing data management platforms for private markets
- Private data use cases working today.
The webinar will be held on June 11 at 10:00am ET/3:00pm London/4:00pm CET.
