Over the past few years, alternative data has emerged as a means of finding alpha, monetising data and challenging competitors. Simultaneously, an increasing number of alternative data providers have joined the market and interest in the data has risen following unbundling under MiFID II and the requirement that investment firms must pay for research. This has led to scrutiny of the value of broker research and an impetus to look elsewhere for information to inform trading decisions.
While alternative data is becoming a popular option, the data is not always easy to source, evaluate and use to best effect. Datasets may be relatively small, incomplete and lack archive data for back-testing, and they may be difficult to integrate with existing data and processes.
